If applicable, it’s important that we talk openly about smoking and the use of alcohol or recreational drugs. These exposures can impact your skin health, as well as your treatment results. I may likewise inquire about any inherited or birth conditions that may affect how well you respond to therapy or how fast you can achieve your goals.

Extensive research supports the ability of sunscreen components, such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, octinoxate, and octisalate, to protect against premature skin aging and skin cancer. I recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which shields against a wide range of harmful UV rays, with an SPF of at least 30, applied every day. If you have a darker skin tone, a tinted sunscreen may provide additional benefits.
To achieve the SPF listed on the label, you need to apply enough sunscreen—about 1 ounce (or 1 shot glass) for exposed skin on your body and at least 1 teaspoon for your face. Apply the product 15 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply every 2 hours while you’re outside.
The vitamin A-like retinoids include actives like retinol and prescription tretinoin. They’re among the most well-studied anti-aging ingredients.
Retinoids work by signaling your skin cells to behave more like younger, healthier cells. They stimulate collagen production, speed up normal skin cell renewal, reduce inflammation, and help protect the skin’s support structures from breaking down. That’s why consistent use of retinoids can both help prevent new wrinkles and soften existing fine lines.

Every person’s skin responds differently to retinoids, so you should follow your dermatologist’s instructions carefully. Starting with a lower-strength product gives your skin time to adjust before moving to a stronger one. Let your dermatologist know if you’re receiving acne treatment or have rosacea, eczema, or sensitive skin so they can modify your regimen to minimize irritation.
Antioxidants help prevent wrinkles by reducing oxidative stress, a process that damages various skin components. Among the currently available antioxidants, vitamin C stands out because it not only shields skin cells from oxidative damage but also supports collagen production. Hydroxy acids, such as the widely available glycolic acid and salicylic acid, strip away dead skin cells from the surface to smooth your complexion. Certain hydroxy acids may also boost collagen replenishment, but they work best alongside other proven anti-aging ingredients.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids—the building blocks that comprise proteins, such as collagen and elastin. In skin care, they act as messengers that signal your skin to repair itself and help keep it firm and resilient. Copper peptides are common examples. Although early studies are encouraging, more high-quality research is needed to establish their long-term effects on wrinkles.

How Can You Build an Effective Anti-Wrinkle Skincare Routine?
A well-designed anti-wrinkle regimen typically includes a gentle cleanser, prescription medications when needed, a moisturizer, daily sunscreen, and a nighttime retinoid, all suited to your skin type. Using a mild cleanser with a low pH helps clear impurities away, promote better penetration of vitamin C, and reduce bacterial growth. Moisturizers help protect acne-prone skin from irritation caused by actives like retinoids and hydroxy acids.
Choosing the right ingredients is only half the equation. Using them correctly is just as important. Begin with your cleanser, then apply any prescription treatment before your moisturizer. Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen in the morning or your retinoid at night.
The order of application affects how well skincare actives penetrate your skin, how stable they remain, and how likely they are to cause irritation, so follow your prescribed routine religiously. Options include purified hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), each with different benefits and duration of effects.
Biostimulatory treatments work by nudging your skin to make more collagen. Some fillers, including PLLA and CaHA, can trigger collagen production, improving skin elasticity while enhancing facial contour. Newer options, such as platelet-rich plasma and exosomes, are reported to amplify natural healing processes, but their effectiveness in correcting wrinkles needs further research.
Skin-tightening treatments jumpstart collagen renewal to restore skin firmness and elasticity without surgery. Besides reducing early skin sagging, they can also improve fine wrinkles, jawline definition, and overall skin texture. Methods include radiofrequency with or without microneedling and microfocused ultrasound.
Solutions for Dynamic Wrinkles
