What Causes Brown Spots?

Brown spots form due to the excessive production of skin pigment, or melanin. Though it is unknown exactly what causes these age spots, we’ve narrowed it down to:

  • Sun exposure
  • Skin aging and,
  • Exposure to UV light, such as with tanning beds

Most patients develop brown spots on the forearms, shoulders, upper back, back of the hands, and face.

How Can I Treat Brown Spots?

Brown spot treatment is a procedure you shouldn’t try to do yourself. There are some popular and proven methods for brown spot removal such as the following:

#1 Prescription Medications

One medication to consider is bleaching creams as they have the potential to fade the brown spots. Bleaching creams usually contain hydroquinone and sometimes retinoids. Hydroquinone is effective for inhibiting the skin’s melanin production and thus, making the skin lighter. Retinoids increase the production of collagen, which improves the color of the skin. Keep in mind that bleaching creams can make the skin quite sensitive to the sun. Therefore, it’s important to maintain extra protection with sunscreen application.

#2 Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments

Procedures such as our intense pulsed light treatment can help dissolve brown spots. Intense pulsed light treatments emit a range of light waves that pass through the skin and targets melanin to dissolve spots.

#3 Other Brown Spot Treatment Options

Chemical peels are another successful procedure for brown spots. They remove the outer layer of the skin to allow fresh new skin to grow. There is also cryosurgery, which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze individual brown spots.

A Convenient Option for Treating Wrinkles

Over time, repetitive muscle contractions and facial movements will inevitably lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Fortunately, with Dysport, you have a temporary solution that’s practically painless. Within just 10-20 minutes, you’ll be on the road to radiant skin.

Can I Prevent Brown Spots?

Though you can’t completely prevent brown spots from appearing on the skin, you can take extra preventative measures to reduce your chances of developing them. These precautions are also great to practice after brown spot removal. Your skin will be a little more sensitive to the sun after treatment. Here’s what you can do to prevent brown spots from developing in the future:

#1 Wear Sunscreen Every Day

This can be the most vital step, as it has been determined that brown spots are caused by sun exposure. When getting certain treatments, like using bleaching creams for brown spot removal, the skin can be very sensitive to the sun’s rays. It’s recommended that individuals wear sunscreen containing at least SPF 30 with UVA and UVB protection.

#2 Wear Protective Clothing

To further protect your skin from the sun, you should consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and hats. There are also UV-Blocking clothes that contain an ultraviolet protection factor, otherwise known as UPF, of about 40.
