What is Dysport®?

Dysport TreatmentDysport is a cosmetic treatment for treating wrinkles made by muscle movement and is the trade name by Medicis for abobotulinum toxin A, a toxin that works to inhibit activation and movement of muscle fibers. This anti-wrinkle treatment, compared to Botox, is relatively new in the US but has had a longer track record in Europe over the last 20 years. Both products are designed to treat the same conditions and have very slight to no difference in effect, longevity, or side effects. Some would argue that Dysport acts quicker than similar cosmetic treatments, taking effect as fast as 2-3 days, whereas Botox begins to act within 4-5 days. When injected into the superficial muscles of the face and/or neck, localized muscle paralysis occurs, creating the inability to move targeted facial muscles which makes it impossible for them to form wrinkles.

Where is Dysport Used?

It is commonly used in the muscles of the face and neck to enhance appearance of:

  • Forehead
  • “Eleven lines” (between eyebrows)
  • “Crows feet”
  • Chin (for “orange peel” skin appearance)
  • Neck bands
  • “Bunny lines of the nose”
  • “Gummy smile”

Treatments of several areas mentioned above is more advanced, and should be done by a highly qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

How Long Does a Treatment last?

Visible wrinkle improvements begin to take effect within 2-3 days after a Dysport treatment and can last anywhere from 3 to 4 months.

Difference of Dysport vs Botox?

While the companies will claim that each of their compounds is better, there is little difference between Dypsort and Botox. Dysport takes effect a little quicker and may be slightly cheaper, but both last the same length of time and carry the same risks and side effects.

What are the Side Effects of Dysport?

  • Pain at the injection site
  • Bruising at the injection site
  • Eyebrow drooping
  • Eyelid drooping
