Restylane Silk and Juvederm Voluma are both widely used soft tissue fillers that can be used to treat wrinkles and volume loss that occurs as a result of aging. Both injectable fillers are temporary, and are eventually resorbed by your body. Cosmetic fillers can work by providing temporary volume, or they can work by creating a scaffold for formation of new collagen by your body. Your cosmetic dermatologist may use a combination of different fillers to provide you the best rejuvenation results depending on your needs. Fillers can be used in combination with other cosmetic surgery procedures that resurface or tighten your skin, or with neuromodulators like Botox that work to paralyze the muscles that create unattractive wrinkles and lines.
Hyaluronic Acid Gels
Hyaluronic acid is an important part of the dermal matrix. When hyaluronic acid is injected into your skin, it is rapidly incorporated into the structure of the skin. Dermal filler products are cross-linked to provide both structure and prevent degradation.
There are a variety of different hyaluronic acid fillers on the market that are chemically constructed to have different consistencies and duration of effect. Different factors that affect how the filler will behave include particle size, the hardness of the gel, and the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the gel. When a hyaluronic acid filler is injected into your skin by your dermatologist, it fills up areas of volume loss and it also attracts water molecules into those areas to add additional volume
One benefit of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can be reversed by injection of hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that dissolves the bumps or misplacement that can occur during hyaluronic acid injection.
Restylane Silk is an injectable cosmetic filler created by the makers of Botox and approved for use in the U.S. in 2014. Like other Restylane products, Restylane Silk is made from hyaluronic acid gel particles, but the particles in Restylane Silk are smaller than the particles in the other Restylane formulations. This small particle size makes Restylane Silk ideal for smoothing fine wrinkles around the mouth or for use in lip augmentation. It is also useful for replacing volume in the upper eyelid, tear troughs, or eyebrow region, although these are considered off label-uses. Restylane Silk lasts approximately 6 to 12 months before the body resorbs it. Adverse effects of are typically mild bruising, redness, or slight swelling at the injection site. Restylane Silk contains 0.3 percent lidocaine to makes the procedure more comfortable.
Juvederm Voluma was designed for treatment of age related volume loss in the cheeks. It is a hyaluronic acid gel that is designed to be injected deeply into the skin to correct volume loss. The structure of Juvederm Voluma is highly cross-linked formulation to provides long-lasting volume, and it is the first and only injectable get that is FDA approved for replacement of volume in the cheeks. Juvederm Voluma is made with a proprietary cross-linking technology that led to its unique approval by the FDA for replacement of cheek volume loss, an area that is relatively difficult to fill when compared to other facial folds and wrinkles. Juvederm Voluma also has lidocaine, a topical anesthetic, included in the formulation, to provide you with additional comfort during your procedure.
Side effects that may occur with Juvederm Voluma last 2 to 4 weeks in most patients, and commonly include injection site reactions like tenderness or swelling, bruising, pain, discoloration, or itching. Because Juvederm Voluma is designed to replace larger volumes of lost tissue, it is not designed to be used in areas other than the cheek. The effects of Juvederm Voluma in areas of thin skin have not been well-studied, so your dermatologist may recommend other treatments for small areas that need correction, such as the under eye area.
