What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is used to fill in deep skin creases, wrinkles, and fine lines. Juvederm XC Ultra and Juvederm XC Ultra Plus are fillers made by Allergan, Inc. and are comparable to the Restylane and Perlane family of hyaluronic acid fillers made by Medicis, Inc.

What types of Juvederm are there?

Juvederm comes in two main types: Juvederm XC Ultra and Juvederm XC Ultra Plus. The “XC” is indicative of the new line of Juvederm fillers that includes lidocaine in the hyaluronic acid mixture. The addition of lidocaine helps decrease the pain of the repeated injections needed when doing a Juvederm filler procedure.

What is the difference between the Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus?

Juvederm XC Ultra and Juvederm XC Ultra Plus differ in the degree of cross-linking, resulting in differences in the ability to attract water and result in more filling. In general, the more cross-linked the hyaluronic acid is, the more water it can attract. The more water that is attracted, the more filling effect is noted. Juvederm XC Ultra Plus has a higher degree of cross-linking and thereby attracts more water for a greater filling effect. It is for this reason that Juvederm XC Ultra Plus is used for deeper lines and wrinkles.

Where can I use Juvederm?

Juvederm is best used in the nasolabial folds (smile lines), chin and mouth area (marionnette lines), tear troughs (under eyes), lips, and glabellar folds (“eleven” lines). Juvederm can also be used for acne scars, smoker’s lines, and cheek enhancement.

What is are the side effects of Juvederm?

Juvederm and Restylane have the same side effect profile. The side effects include:

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Lumpiness or irregularity/asymmetry
  • Arterial occlusion and skin necrosis
  • Blindness (eye areas only)
  • Allergy to Juvederm or the lidocaine in it
  • Need for further correction or treatment

You must consult your doctor immediately if you notice blanching of the skin or crusting in the area of injection. Prolonged pain may be a warning sign of arterial necrosis, a severe and very serious side effect.
